Chapter Sixteen

Brethren Clubhouse

“Petty Officer Penny Lane is working on Dennis Fowler’s current location. The address on the envelope he sent to Tori is bogus.” Wrath read the current SITREP while waiting to hear from Penny. The situation report had nothing to do with what happened with Julia and Tori. “Once we find him, I’ll talk to Grayson about sending people out to have a conversation with the lowlife piece of shit.” He thought of his pregnant wife, Cara, unable to understand men such as Fowler.

“Thanks, Prez. Tracker and I will wait for word from you.” On the other end of the phone, Moses watched Tori pace the living room of Ethan’s safe house. “Tracker and Julia arrived a few minutes ago.”

“Pretty late, isn’t it?”

“One of her younger patients had an emergency. She met them at the hospital. It took more time than she’d anticipated.” Moses thought of the exhaustion written all over her face when Julia stepped into the house hidden in the tall pines surrounding Liberty Lake. “Raider’s on watch. We’ll be taking six hour shifts.”

“I’ll send Gunner, Fuse, and Fargo your way.” Wrath paused a moment. “Two men per watch, four hour shifts.”

“You got it, Prez.”

“One more thing, Moses. Let the women know we will catch whoever is doing this.”

“Will do, Wrath.” Disconnecting, he slid the phone into a pocket, his focus on the still pacing Tori.

Tracker was in one of the bedrooms with Julia. He and Raider had waited inside the hospital for her to finish with the patient, then they’d escorted her out, Raider standing guard while Tracker helped her into the passenger seat. He’d driven them back to the safe house with Raider following as added protection.

Wrath had ordered them not to inform Julia of what had happened until after she left work. Tracker had obeyed, explaining what happened when they were less than two miles from the safe house. After ushering her inside, he’d waited as she hugged Tori. He escorted her to an empty bedroom, where she’d collapsed from fatigue and the new threat. Tracker had come out a few times, staying with the others the last.

“How’s she doing?” Moses handed him a beer, taking a seat at the table.

“Worried, ready for all of this to go away.” Tracker took a long, slow swallow, watching Tori sink into one of the oversized chairs in the living room. “As much of a shithead as this Denny character is, I can’t see him coming after both of them. His misplaced anger is directed at Tori. Why include Jules?”

“Because hurting her will devastate Tori.”

“How does he even know about her?” Tracker asked. “From what Tori said, I got the impression Julia never knew about him.”

“Didn’t know about the pregnancy,” Moses clarified. “I’ll ask her if Julia ever met him. What does that matter?”

Tracker drummed his fingers on the tabletop. “If Jules met Fowler, she may have unknowingly said something that set him off. Or maybe she disapproved of him and let Tori know.”

“What are you two
